Miami may be best known for its tropical weather, stunning beaches and beautiful people, but don’t let its reputation fool you. This energetic city in the sun is home to some of the countries finest museums. Whether visitors are into modern art, science or history, Miami’s thriving museum culture offers something for everyone.

Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science

This family-friendly museum, located in downtown Miami’s Bayfront Park is a science-geek wonderland. It offers visitors state-of-the-art technology exhibits and an out-of-this-world planetarium. They even have a multi-level aquarium which offers visitors a glimpse of South Florida’s natural ecosystem. The museum is large enough to accommodate substantial crowds, so getting in is never an issue.

The Bass

In the heart of Collins Park in South Beach, The Bass is a newly reinvigorated art museum with a focus on the contemporary. Thanks to their 2017 $12 million renovation, the museum’s exhibition space has doubled, featuring four new galleries, educational space, a gift shop and a café. And the best part? Since it’s just across the street from the beach, sun worshipers can hop over anytime to get out of the heat and expand their minds.

Pérez Art Museum Miami

Locally known as PAMM, the Pérez Art Museum Miami is located downtown and is one of the city’s most popular modern art museums. In 2013, PAMM relocated to the Biscayne Bayfront. Inside, visitors will find everything from kinetic sculptures to boat replicas. Outside PAMM’s waterfront steps have become a gathering place for Miami creatives, and home to events such as Q&As with famous artists.

HistoryMiami

Miami is a city steeped in history, and HistoryMiami tells the rich story well. Inside its Mediterranean-style building, fascinating exhibits show how the city transformed from swampland into one of Florida’s most vibrant urban centers. The museum touches on a wide variety of subjects from transportation to sports, so there’s sure to be something for everyone, and the exhibits are fun and interactive, so kids and adults will have fun exploring.

These four museums will get visitors started, but by no means is it complete, Miami is home to dozens of enticing museums. The next time you’re looking for a little sun — and a little culture — why not head to this Biscayne Bay jewel?
